Early conversations around Anima, Animus began with John Donne’s assertion that “no man is an island,” and an inversion of that idea: showing up to the studio can feel like showing up stranded on an island. Indeed, the only way off the island, and back to our fellow humans, is through the act of making. For Goering, the studio becomes a place for making the unconscious salient and channeling the collective through creation. Goering arrives surrounded by what has accumulated there: objects, images, memories, historical references, unfinished thoughts, and the residue of previous decisions. Through the repeated act of making, these things are rearranged and reconsidered until unexpected relationships begin to surface. They live less like symbols to be decoded than things temporarily possessed by memory, projection, or some unseen interior life.
Taking its title from Carl Jung’s conception of the anima and animus, the exhibition considers the encounter between what is known and what remains obscured within oneself. For Goering, that encounter happens through the material and the intuitive processes of painting and collage. Meaning is not necessarily determined before a work begins. Instead, it is something that can reveal itself through the process of making.
